What counts as a drainage emergency

A drainage emergency is any situation where waste water is going somewhere it should not, and waiting makes the damage worse. Foul water coming back up through a downstairs toilet or shower. A manhole surcharging into a garden or across a path. A commercial kitchen that cannot use its sinks in the middle of service. A garage or cellar taking water during heavy rain. None of those improve overnight.

So Drainage Solutions operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week across Southampton, Romsey and the surrounding Hampshire towns. There is no answering service and no separate out-of-hours number: you get the person who does the work, and you get a straight answer about when they can be with you.

An emergency visit is not a different standard of work. The chambers are lifted, the camera goes down where the situation allows, the run is cleared with the right method for what is in it, the standing water is vacuumed away, and you are told what caused it. The difference is only the hour on the clock.

Who this is for

  • Households with sewage backing up into a bathroom, kitchen or utility
  • Anyone with a manhole or gully overflowing outside the property
  • Pubs, restaurants and takeaways whose drains have failed mid-service
  • Care homes, surgeries and schools where a washroom failure cannot wait
  • Landlords and agents with a tenant unable to use the only toilet in a property
  • Commercial sites with flooded yards, car parks or delivery areas

When it is needed

  • Foul water rising into a bath, shower, toilet or floor gully
  • A chamber or gully overflowing across a garden, path or drive
  • Every fixture in the property draining slowly or not at all
  • Water entering a garage, cellar or outbuilding
  • Strong drain smells with visible standing water
  • A commercial site that has had to stop trading because of drainage

What an hour costs during a drainage failure

Once a system surcharges, the volume keeps arriving. Every use of a fixture, every appliance cycle and every minute of rainfall adds to what has nowhere to go, and the overflow point is always the lowest opening: a downstairs shower tray, a ground floor WC, an external chamber next to a doorway.

Foul water spreads fast and stops being a drainage problem within minutes. It reaches flooring, skirting, plasterboard and stored belongings, and the cost of dealing with it climbs far more quickly than the cost of the drainage work itself. For a business, the loss is trading hours you never get back.

  • Sewage inside the property

Contaminated water in a living space is a health issue and an insurance matter. The clean-up and drying costs typically dwarf the cost of clearing the drain.

  • Damage that spreads by the hour

Water travels under floor coverings, into joists and through ceilings below. What is contained at midnight is not contained by morning.

  • Lost trading time

A pub, kitchen or care setting with a failed drainage system cannot operate. Every hour closed is money that a call-out never approaches.

  • Pipework damaged by the surcharge

Standing sewage held under pressure works at joints and washes out the ground around a leaking run. An emergency left overnight can become an excavation.

  • A tenant left without facilities

For landlords, a property without a usable toilet is an urgent obligation, not a next-working-day item.

Common mistakes we are called out to fix

  • Continuing to use fixtures while a run is surcharged, which puts more water on the floor.
  • Pouring chemicals into standing water, which leaves a hazard for whoever opens the pipe.
  • Waiting for morning because it feels cheaper; the same number is answered at 2am.
  • Lifting a heavy manhole cover alone at night with no lighting or edge protection.
  • Mopping foul water rather than having it extracted, which spreads contamination.

How an emergency call is handled

  1. 01

    The phone is answered

Any hour, any day. You describe what is happening and where, and you speak to the person who will be doing the work, not a call centre.

  2. 02

    Immediate advice

You are told what to stop using and what to do in the meantime to keep the damage down, before anybody has even set off.

  3. 03

    On-site assessment

Chambers lifted, the direction of flow established and the affected fixtures checked, so the obstruction is located rather than guessed at.

  4. 04

    Make safe and clear

Standing water vacuumed out, then the run cleared by the right method for what is in it: rodding, high-pressure jetting or bulk removal.

  5. 05

    Test and verify

The system is run and watched flowing, with the camera down the run where the situation calls for it, so you can see the problem has actually gone.

  6. 06

    Clean up and explain

Waste taken away, surfaces washed down, and a plain account of what caused it and whether anything needs following up in daylight.

What you get from an emergency call-out here

  • A real person, any hour

No answering service, no callback queue, no separate out-of-hours number. The phone is answered by the person who attends.

  • Local, so travel is short

Based on Cutforth Way in Romsey and working across Southampton and the surrounding towns, not dispatched from the other side of the county.

  • Fully equipped on arrival

Camera, jetting equipment and wet vacuum on the van, so the job is finished on the visit rather than booked in for a return.

  • Water removed, not left

Standing foul water is vacuumed away and taken with us, so the property is usable again rather than merely draining.

  • Diagnosed, not just cleared

You are told what caused the failure, so an emergency does not quietly become a monthly event.

  • Qualified and insured

14 years in the trade, fully insured, City & Guilds qualified and WJA qualified for jetting work, at 2am as much as at 2pm.

Emergency drainage in detail

These are the situations we are most often called out to across Hampshire.

Sewage backing up into a property

The most urgent category. The overflow appears at the lowest fixture, usually a ground floor shower, bath or WC. The first priority is stopping further use, the second is extracting what is already there, and the third is clearing the run causing it.

Surcharging manholes and chambers

A chamber overflowing outside is a warning that the run beyond it is blocked and the building is next. Dealt with promptly it is an outside job; left, it becomes an inside one.

Commercial kitchen failures mid-service

Grease-laden runs surcharge at the busiest moment. The site cannot serve food with foul water on the floor, so the work is about restoring trading as fast as possible and then dealing with the underlying grease build-up properly.

Storm and heavy rainfall flooding

Surface water systems in Hampshire get overwhelmed when gullies and channel drains are silted. Water then heads for garages, thresholds and airbricks. Emergency work clears capacity; the follow-up is maintaining the surface water system so the next storm is uneventful.

Flooded garages, cellars and outbuildings

Below drainage level, water cannot leave by gravity and must be extracted. Wet vacuuming gets the volume out quickly before it soaks further into the structure.

Collapses discovered out of hours

Sometimes what the camera finds at midnight is structural. In that case the priority is making the property usable, and the repair or excavation is planned properly for daylight rather than rushed.

Landlords, agents and managed property

We attend on behalf of landlords and agents, deal directly with the tenant on site, and report back on what was found and what it needs, including whether it was caused by something being put down the drain.

What to do while you wait

Stop using every fixture in the property, including washing machines and dishwashers. Keep people and pets away from standing foul water. Do not add chemicals. If it is safe, note which chambers are surcharged, it speeds up diagnosis on arrival.

24/7 Emergency Callouts: your questions answered

Do you really answer the phone at night and at weekends?

Yes. So Drainage Solutions operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. Emergency drainage does not keep office hours, so neither do we.

How quickly can you get to me?

We are based on Cutforth Way in Romsey and cover Southampton and the surrounding towns, so travel times within the coverage area are short. Ring and you will be given a straight answer about when we can be with you rather than a vague window.

What does an emergency call-out cost?

It depends on what is wrong and what it takes to clear it, which is why the situation is assessed on site before work starts. You are told what is involved before anything begins, nothing is started without you agreeing to it.

What counts as an emergency?

Foul water coming back into the building, a surcharging chamber, water entering a garage or cellar, or any drainage failure that has stopped a business trading. If waiting makes it worse, it is an emergency.

What should I do while I wait for you?

Stop using every fixture in the property, including appliances. Keep people and pets away from standing foul water. Do not pour chemicals into it. If it is safe to do so, note which chambers outside are full, it speeds things up on arrival.

Can you fix it there and then, or is it just a temporary measure?

The van carries camera, jetting and wet vacuum equipment, so the large majority of emergencies are resolved on the visit. If what is found is structural, flow is restored and the repair is planned properly rather than bodged at 3am.

Do you attend commercial premises out of hours?

Yes: pubs, kitchens, shops, care homes and managed sites. Out-of-hours attendance is often exactly what keeps a commercial site trading the next morning.

Will you clear up the mess?

Standing water and waste are vacuumed out and taken away by us, and surfaces are washed down. That is handled in house rather than left for you or passed to another firm.

Do you work with landlords and letting agents?

Yes. We attend on your behalf, deal with the tenant on site and report back on what was found, what was done and what caused it.

Are you insured and qualified?

Fully insured, City & Guilds qualified, WJA qualified for high-pressure jetting, with 14 years in Hampshire drainage.
